1/2..Priest faces jail over sex abuse…

A Catholic priest dubbed the "fat vicar" is facing jail after he was found guilty of sexually abusing a teenage boy at a children's home.
Father Anthony McSweeney, 68, preyed on the vulnerable youngster while working at Grafton Close Children's Home in Hounslow, west London, between 1979 and 1981. Morbidly obese McSweeney was also found guilty of making indecent images of children.

He preyed on the boy with his close friend John Stingemore, 72, who managed the care home and was found dead in January - weeks before his trial.
Wearing a black suit and red tie and carrying a walking stick, McSweeney stared straight ahead as the jury of six men and five women returned their verdicts at London's Southwark Crown Court. He was cleared of three indecent assaults on two other boys at the care home and taking a pornographic photo of one of these boys.
The priest was once enlisted by TV cook Delia Smith to hold a special football service at Norwich City.
And he officiated at the 1990 wedding of boxing star Frank Bruno and his now ex wife Laura.
McSweeney was investigated as part of Operation Fernbridge - the police probe into allegations a VIP paedophile ring existed at Grafton Close and Elms Guest House in Barnes, west London.
Jurors heard the priest got sexual kicks out of watching children shower, and he collected child porn.

2/2..Stingemore used his connections to help get his close friend a job at Grafton Close, where they molested vulnerable boys together.
McSweeney watched as a teenage boy was abused by Stingemore in the care home shower.
McSweeney confessed to watching a child porn film featuring boys as young as ten on a home cinema with Stingemore but claimed he turned it off.
And he denied molesting boys as they sat on his lap - claiming he was too fat to fit a teen on him. Stingemore was sacked from Grafton Close in 1981 and

McSweeney's visits abruptly stopped as he continued with his career in the priesthood.
In 1998 McSweeney nearly lost his career when his cleaner discovered his stash of sex toys, truncheons and pornographic videos at St Peter's Catholic Church in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex.

She played one of the tapes and saw it featured two boys between 14 and 16 years-old having sex, the court heard. He was originally threatened that he would be "banished" from the priesthood, but after around six months was quietly moved to a new parish, St George's, in Norwich.

McSweeney, of Old Brighton Road, Pease Pottage, West Sussex, was found guilty of one indecent assault on a male between 1979 and 1981.
And he was found guilty of three counts of making indecent images of children.
He was released on bail and sentence was adjourned until March 27.

Judge Alistair McCreath warned McSweeney that he faces prison.
Bailing him, the judge said: "You are not to come to court in four weeks thinking to yourself that the judge gave me bail and therefore I'm not to go to prison, because that would be a false hope."
Responding to today's verdict, Gillian Norton, chief executive of Richmond Council, said: "The council is sorry that a child in its care was indecently assaulted.

"The assault happened 35 years ago and clearly the service leadership and management laid bare in court were totally unacceptable.
"The situation today is completely different. Most looked-after children are in foster homes. Only those children needing very specialist services are placed in children's homes.
"All placements are subject to rigorous checks and controls within a statutory regulatory framework and this includes senior social workers who are independent of the child's worker.

"The system today puts much greater emphasis on the views of children and staff are employed specifically to help children to give their views." Sat, 28 Feb, 2015

Pervert Jimmy Savile: Truly a wolf in sheep's clothing…

As fresh revelations emerge about Jimmy Savile's reign of terror at Stoke.

Mandeville in England, Ivan Little lifts the lid on the notorious pervert's links to Northern Ireland dating back 40 years.

Jimmy Savile was the self-proclaimed Pied Piper of Peace in Northern Ireland, who was subsequently unmasked as the perverted paedophile of pop who abused scores of young girls, handicapped children and even corpses.
Police believe the flamboyant TV and radio star, who raised more than £40m for charities, may have been one of Britain's most prolific sexual offenders after more than 400 people made complaints against him after his death in October 2011.

But, back in the 1970s, when the garish DJ with the ridiculously blond hair, who claimed he had family ties to Belfast, led thousands of Ulster youngsters on anti-violence marches, no one smelt a rat.

This week, a new report on Savile's deviant activities at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in England said that significant opportunities had been missed to stop his attacks.

The report found that Savile had abused 63 people, but that a formal complaint had been ignored even though his reputation as a sex-pest was an open secret among some staff. Savile's abuse at Stoke Mandeville, in TV studios and during public appearances was happening in the years that he was visiting Northern Ireland on a regular basis, but the police here say they have no record of complaints about his behaviour.

A major new book late last year about Savile's sick abuse detailed his links to the province and confirmed he had once boasted that he had friends in the IRA who would do his nasty work if anyone got in his way.

In Plain Sight: The Life and Lies of Jimmy Savile by Dan Davies explores how and why the man who also crowed about having friends in high places, like Prince Charles, Margaret Thatcher and Charlie Haughey, was able to get away with predatory sex offences for more than 50 years. Sat, 28 Feb, 2015

Ex-police officer Alan Saffery from Hereford jailed after child abuse….
An ex-police officer has been jailed for 12 years for multiple counts of sexual abuse in the 1970s and 1980s.
Alan Saffery, 61, of Spinney Grove, Hereford, was convicted of six counts of indecent assault and two counts of sex with a girl under the age of 13.
Saffery was cleared of two counts of rape of a girl under the age of 16 on a second alleged victim.
He was convicted at Worcester Crown Court on two counts of making indecent photographs of children in 2013.
Judge Robert Juckes QC told the former West Mercia officer that his job was to protect members of the community, not to abuse them.
The force said the offences were reported to officers by the victim during another investigation.
"Outwardly, Saffery was a respected police officer and an upstanding member of the community. However, behind closed doors he was a dangerous sexual predator who took advantage of a young girl," Det Insp Richard Rees said."Today his past has caught up with him." Saturday, 28 Feb, 2015

1/2..Convicted rapist Gordon Burns sentenced to additional five years…
A convicted rapist, already serving a life sentence, has been jailed for an additional five years.
At the High Court in Glasgow, Gordon Burns, 52, was found guilty of raping a 13-year-old girl and sexually abusing a second girl between the age of five and 11.
The offences took place in various locations between 1986 and 1996.
They only came to light in 2012, more than 20 years later, after one victim contacted police.
The court heard that Burns raped the 13-year-old girl at a dirt track near Biggar, Lanarkshire, in October 1986 and March 1987.
The victim, now aged 41, told how she became "panicky" when he drove
She told prosecutor Shanti Maguire: "He then put the knife to my throat and raped me.
"He basically told me: 'You're going to work as a prostitute for me. You do as I want or you'll end up in the bottom of the Clyde.'"
She added: "I was 13 years old and I was raped at knifepoint. Afterwards he got back into the driver's seat.
"I was just in shock, disbelief. I was absolutely terrified.
"I was thinking a multitude of thoughts."
The victim said she didn't tell anyone at the time and added: "Back in those days that wasn't the sort of thing you would talk about."

2/2..It was not until 2012 that she plucked up the courage to contact police about the rape.
Burns was also convicted of sexually abusing the other young girl on various occasions between 1992 and 1999 at different locations - including Glasgow, Lanarkshire and Falkirk.
The victim, now aged 27, recalled that he would regularly touch her inappropriately and kiss her.
Lord Bracadale sentenced Burns to five years for what he described as "very serious charges".
The judge said it would be up to the parole board, who had refused him twice before, whether he would ever be allowed back on the streets.
Burns, who had denied the offences, smiled at his wife as he was led handcuffed back to the cells.
In 2000, Burns received a life sentence for the brutal rape of two teenage prostitutes in Glasgow.
The judge in that case described him as "a serious danger" and he was ordered to serve a minimum nine years behind bars.
His QC Frances McMenamin said that the 2000 case made "highly disturbing reading", and that it was clear that Burns once had "deeply entrenched views" towards crime and women.
However, the advocate said he was now "well motivated" to change his ways.

Jason Beynon guilty of sex with underage boy in Swansea…

A Swansea man already jailed for trying to abduct a schoolboy last year, has been convicted of sexually assaulting another child more than 20 years ago.
Jason Beynon, 40, was 16 when he began having sex with a younger boy in the 1990s.
He denied gross indecency with a child, 12 counts of indecent assault and two serious sexual assaults but a jury found him guilty.
He will be sentenced at Swansea Crown Court next month.
His victim went to the police last year after hearing that Beynon had been jailed for three-and-a-half years for attempting to abduct an 11-year-old boy in the Gorseinon area earlier in 2014.
The victim told BBC Wales he felt he had to speak out.
"It was by pure chance that I saw the media reports and a story regarding the attempted kidnapping of a young boy on the very street that I grew up on," he said.

"This boy was almost the same age. Reading the story, my worst fears came true."
The trial heard the offences took place over an 18 month period and the first incident took place in the toilets of a holiday park where they were both on holiday.
The pair had struck up a friendship because of their shared interest in computer games.
But the victim told the court that while he believed Beynon was a close friend, the defendant had a hold on him and that it felt like they were in a secret relationship.
"When I reached 14, I knew I liked girls and I knew it was wrong, but he sort of had me into thinking it was that we were in a relationship," the court heard.

"It was a best friendship but like a secret relationship. It was always have to be just me and him there and he'd always shut the door."
Beynon claimed it was all a "fabrication" but the jury rejected this.

Clare man convicted of sexually abusing one-year-old baby…
“Older sister grabbed a poker and hit man over the head to get him to stop”…

A Clare man has been convicted of sexually assaulting a one-year-old baby.
The 45-year-old man had pleaded not guilty in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to sexual assault between April 2005 and October 2006 in Co Clare.

The man was previously sentenced to 12 years for sexually abusing two young girls. He will be sentenced in April on this new conviction.
After a three-day trial a jury of nine men and three women returned a majority guilty verdict after deliberating for just under four hours.

During the trial, prosecuting counsel Anne Rowland BL told the jury that the victim’s older sister, who was 10 at the time of the incident, was the main witness in the case.
She told the court how the victim and her siblings were living in “extremely difficult” circumstances at the time of the incident. Their parents were heavy drinkers and the children would often go hungry and have no heat or electricity in the house.

The court heard that when the baby girl was brought home from hospital she was handed to her 10-year-old sister to look after so the parents could go drinking.
The witness testified that she came home from school and walked into the house to find her baby sister naked on the sittingroom floor. Seeing the man sexually abusing the baby, she grabbed a poker and hit the man over the head to get him to stop.
Now aged 19, she told defence counsel Geraldine Fitzpatrick SC that the abuser knew the family and would often arrive at the house extremely drunk and fall asleep in a chair. He would sometimes be left alone in the house to keep an eye on the children.
The man was arrested on July 26th, 2011 and denied the allegations when questioned by gardaí.
The court heard that the child’s foster mother brought her to be examined by a consultant paediatrician in July 2011. The doctor found evidence of past abuse.
Judge Sarah Berkley remanded the man in custody for sentencing on April 14th next. Sat, 28 Feb, 2015

Ballynahinch pensioner to be jailed for sexually abusing girls…

A paedophile pensioner from Ballynahinch is to be jailed after a jury unanimously convicted him sexually abusing two girls.

The Downpatrick Crown Court jury of six men and six women deliberated for around three hours over two days before returning to find Christopher O’Hare (70) unanimously guilty of a total of 13 counts of indecent assault – six against one victim and seven against another.

In relation to the second victim, who was abused on various dates between April 1st, 1986 and March 1st, 1990, the jury found him unanimously not guilty of four counts of rape and there further charges of indecent assault.
After being told by trial Judge Piers Grant that he could accept majority verdicts on which at least 10 agreed in relation to the remanding five charges on indecent assault, the jury retired for a further 40 minutes before finding O’Hare not guilty of four of the counts but were “hopelessly split” on he last remaining charge.

Although the Crown are to take instructions whether O’Hare will face a retrial on that count, Judge Grant told the man that given the convictions, he faces a “certain” prison sentence.

Adjourning passing that sentence until March 24th, by which time a presentence probation report will have been compiled, O’Hare was released on bail but only after he had signed the police sex offenders register.
During the two-week hearing, the jury heard evidence that when the now grown up girls were around eight years old, O’Hare began to subject them to sexual abuse when they were at his home.

For the first victim, her ordeal began in 1977 and only stopped in 1981 when she told her abuser what he was doing “wasn’t right” so he stopped.
His second victim recounted how O’Hate subjected her to numerous brutal sexual assaults in “a pit”, a derelict building and his home.

1/2..Court orders sex offender not 'to loiter' in areas where children are playing…

* Man was allegedly seen at Mosque where children gathering for prayers
* In another incident, he was drinking near playground and seen staring at children
* Judge orders him to have 'no interaction with children'
* He is also ordered not 'to loiter' where children are playing
* Man cannot be identified by media by order of the court.

A court has ordered a sex offender who was released from prison in 2010 to have no interaction with children and not to loiter where children gather.

Chief Superintendent Patrick Leahy told Dublin Circuit Criminal Court that the 63-year-old Dublin man is a risk to the public because of his predilection for juveniles and his alcohol addiction.
The application was brought by gardai under section 16 of the 2001 Sex Offenders Act which allows the court to prohibit the actions of a respondent if it is necessary to protect the public from serious harm.

Judge Martin Nolan granted an exclusion order sought by the State. He ordered that the man can not be identified in the press.
In 2007 the man was sentenced to two years imprisonment for the sexual assault of a juvenile. He was convicted again in 2008 of another sexual assault and sentenced to two years with one suspended.

2/2...In 2010 he was released from Dublin's Arbour Hill Prison, subject to a condition that he comply with the directions of the Probation Services for five years.
The court heard that he previously scored high on a risk assessment test, which would have considered his alcohol abuse problems as a contributory risk factor.
In a affidavit to the court Chief Supt Leahy said in November 2013 the man was alleged to have been drunk near a Mosque where a lot of children were gathering at night for prayers.
He is alleged to have exposed his genitals and to have groped a child and masturbated in a laneway. A file on this incident has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
In another incident in Dublin city he was seen sitting on a wall across from a playground staring at children aged nine and ten. He was drinking at the time and when asked why he was there he appeared to be in an excited state.
The order sought that the man be prohibited from having any interaction with any child and from loitering around areas where children usually congregate.
Judge Nolan noted that the 2001 act was there to protect youngsters in the country from predators. Dean Kelly BL, defending, said that any order under the act must be proportional and argued that the prohibitions may be too vague and too broad.
The judge refused to include an order that the man not consume any alcohol in a public place. He said there are plenty of laws to deal with him being drunk and if being drunk leads him into trouble he will have to deal with the consequences.

Man who raped three-year-old boy at nursery jailed…
A man who was found guilty of raping a young boy and sexually abusing a girl has been jailed for eight years.
Mark Maclennan, 30, of Bath, also admitted possessing and taking indecent images of children.
The boy, who was three at the time, was raped at a nursery in the Lochaber area.
The girl was abused on numerous occasions in Stirling, Dunblane and Dunfermline, when she was aged between12 to15.
He has been jailed at the High Court in Edinburgh.
Maclennan was also found guilty of having thousands of indecent images of children on a laptop that he donated to the nursery.
A charge of sexually abusing a girl at the nursery when she was aged between four and five was found not proven by the jury.
During the trial in January a taped interview with the boy was played to the jury.
In the video recording the three-year-old was questioned by police officers about the incident and said: "Don't like Mark."
The rape happened sometime between 1 August 2012 and 23 May 2013.
The girl, who is now 19, said Maclennan touched her on a number of occasions over a period of almost three years, including at a pantomime costume fitting. The abuse happened between October 2007 and July 2010.

1/2..UK charity boss Simon Harris jailed for Kenya child sex abuse…
A British charity boss who abused Kenyan street children after luring them to his home has been jailed for more than 17 years.
Simon Harris, 55, carried out sex attacks on boys in the town of Gilgil, between 1996 and 2013.
Harris, of Pudleston, near Leominster, was head of charity VAE, which placed volunteers in Kenyan schools.
He was convicted of eight counts of indecent and sexual assault, at Birmingham Crown Court in December.
The case is one of the first of its kind using legislation that allows British citizens to be tried for sex offences committed abroad if it is also an offence in that country.
The [victims'] mental scars will almost certainly never heal”said Judge Phillip Parker.
Harris was also convicted of four counts of possessing indecent images of children.
He was, however, cleared of 10 further charges, including rape.
The jury failed to reach a verdict on one remaining count of rape and the judge discharged them of their duty in relation to that.
Harris, a former classics teacher, had preyed on "very small children who have no families, nobody to look after them... sheltering in doorways" with the promise of food and shelter, the jury heard.
Judge Phillip Parker QC described him as "intelligent" and "charismatic", giving him "a veneer of respectability", which enabled him to design his life to be close to boys.
In Kenya, Harris had assumed a "hallowed" position, accountable to no-one, that allowed him to abuse street children who were amongst the most vulnerable in the world, the judge said.
"It had been urged upon me that I should give you credit for all the charitable work you introduced to Kenya but I am afraid, when your so-called charity work is the vehicle for abuse, I cannot buy into this concept," the judge said.
He described Harris as "a significant risk" to young boys and his Kenyan victims had been left "used, degraded, and humiliated".

2/2...Travel ban lifted…
"The mental scars will almost certainly never heal," Judge Parker said.
Defence QC Jeremy Dein had told the court that Harris's charity work should not be entirely discounted, describing him as "an exceptional philanthropist."
"He is ashamed of his behaviour - both as a teacher and when in Kenya," he said.
The abuse came to light after evidence was passed on by a Channel 4 documentary team making a film about the plight of Gilgil's street children.
Officers from the National Crime Agency, who travelled to Kenya in a bid to trace Harris's victims, described him as "one of the most prolific child sex offenders" they had ever encountered.
It emerged during his trial that Harris had been banned from travelling abroad after a 2009 conviction for possession of indecent images of children, for which he served 15 months in jail.
However, the jury heard he successfully appealed to have the ban lifted, allowing him to travel back and forth to Kenya, where he abused more boys, until he was eventually arrested back in the UK in June 2013, by West Mercia Police.
Speaking after the conviction, officers said they had identified a number of potential victims during their inquiry but believe Harris could have abused hundreds of boys.
"The convictions and today's sentence sends an important message to people who have been the victim of crimes such as these to come forward, because time and geography is no barrier to justice," Det Ch Insp Damian Barrett said.
Lawyers representing Kenya victims also welcomed the sentence.
"This case is the first time a British man has been convicted for sex offences carried out in Africa, and should serve as a warning to paedophiles looking to sexually abuse children overseas, believing they are beyond the law," Nichola Marshall, from law firm Leigh Day, said.
Harris's trial is thought to be the first involving the use of live video link technology from Africa to hear evidence.
He had denied all the offences in Kenya, but before his trial got under way he admitted six offences of indecent assault against three boys, aged between 13 and 14, when he was a teacher at Shebbear College, Devon in the 1980s.

Sex abuser apologises to victim publicly…
“Sentencing adjourned as man acknowledges abuse during 1970s”…
Tony McCarthy, of Fairylawn, Coolatooder, Ballinhassig, Co Cork, was before Cork Circuit Criminal Court for sentencing yesterday after recently pleading guilty to eight counts of indecently assaulting the girl, from when she was aged 12, from 1969 to 1977.
His victim said to him from the witness box yesterday: “I want to say,Tony McCarthy, you robbed me of my past, you are destroying my present, but from today I will not give you my future.
“Before I was sexually abused I was a happy, carefree, trusting and loving child. When he began sexually abusing me he ripped my world apart and turned everything upside down. In the blink of an eye he robbed me of my childhood safety, trust and innocence.
“When he used my body sexually for his own pleasure he caused me to experience what no child should ever have to experience.I felt intense fear, confusion and shame.
“Tony McCarthy, then an adult and 20 years my senior, chose to use me sexually as a child for his own gratification, he destroyed my childhood and my life. His actions ripped me apart. It has taken the rest of my life to get back to where I am today.
“I want to thank all those men and women who have been brave enough to report the sexual violence in their childhood who have paved the way for me,”she said.
Garda Ashling Keating said the sexual abuse consisted of McCarthy fondling the girl’s genital and breast areas.
Garda Keating said the father of four was involved in wholesale business in Cork and was seen as an upstanding member of the community, active in the church and with no previous convictions.
Donal O’Sullivan, defending, said the accused unreservedly apologised to the victim for what he did to her.
The injured party said that what continued to hurt her was the way in which some people continued to blame her for what Tony McCarthy had done to her as a child.
Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin adjourned sentencing until November 26 and said: “It is very significant to me that the victim puts a lot of stress on people, other than the defendant, who blame her continuously and wrongly. Those people whoever they are should reflect on their stance in the meantime.
“The accused admitted his guilt, acknowledging he is the person who wronged the victim. He has publically vindicated the lady’s stance. He has acknowledged before the world that he wronged her. It is not open to anyone els

1/2...EU report on online child sex abuse ‘a wake up call’…
In January 2014, a man was arrested as part of a major investigation into online child sexual exploitation. The individual had more than 80 social networking profiles, email addresses, and video chat accounts to sexually abuse children via webcams on compute
Once victims had sent him an indecent image or video of themselves, he started threatening them and involving them in far more serious abuse.
The youngest child was an eight-year-old girl she was forced to involve other children in the abuse. The suspect pretended to be a 13-year-old boy.
His case was one of a number highlighted in a report on sexual exploitation of children online, published by Europol, the EU police agency.
The suspect also coerced adult men into performing a sexual act via webcam which was recorded and used against them unless they paid money.
The report said it was not known if the indecent materials provided by the children were commercially distributed online, but added: “Bearing in mind the profile of the suspect, this possibility cannot be excluded”.
In a second case, a 17-year-old girl was a victim of extortion which started when her boyfriend took a photo of her breasts with his mobile phone, and shared it with his 17-year-old friend.
The latter sent the photo via a social media platform to the victim to inform her he had it, demanding money and threatening her with publishing her photo elsewhere if she refused to pay.
Verbal blackmailing also took place at school. The girl gradually began to give him €10 or €20 over the course of a few months, totalling about €600.
In a third case, a 17-year-old boy in Edinburgh took his own life in July 2013. He had been targeted online by an offender who posed as a teenage girl and with whom he had shared indecent images of himself. The victim was then blackmailed by the offender, demanding money. He was told that if he failed to pay he would post the victim’s naked images on social networking sites.
The report was conducted by the European Financial Coalition against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children Online, a coalition of experts from law enforcement, the private sector, and civil society.

2/2...It said it was concerned at the emergence of an online market selling sexualised images either extorted from children or taken from photographs and videos voluntarily uploaded by minors on social network sites.

It said the development of a profit motive, in addition to a sexual motive, was a new development in what was increasingly a sophisticated and hard-to-detect online crime. Both individuals and large-scale enterprises were involved.

It warned parents that images they post online of their own children can and are being used by people for sexual purposes including on social network profiles such as “the most sexy 4, 5, 6 years old”.

It also said there was large-scale sexual extortion, which combined blackmail with webcam scamming, which usually took place on dating sites, in chat rooms or social networks. It said there was some evidence pointing to a ring of African and Southeast Asian networks targeting victims throughout Europe, often operating on “an almost industrial scale from call-centre type offices”.

Elsewhere, the report documented the threat posed by the live streaming of abuse for payment. The people involved offer homeless children and even their own children for sexual abuse for payment.

Senator Jillian van Turnhout, who has campaigned on tackling child abuse imagery, said the report was “a wake-up call” to legislators, parents, and schools.
“The fact that this area is mutating is very scary and very worrying. You have both large-scale organisations and individuals down to one classmate to another engaged in sexual exploitation.

She said her experience with young people was that they act responsibly when real dangers are explained honestly and openly. And she called on parents to be careful about what images of children they post online.

Kevin Titheridge was also caught with 366 indecent images of children at his Arbroath home and a flat in Aberdeen.
The 34-year-old was working as a trainee at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary when he made payments to a woman who had young children strip in front of a webcam for him.
Titheridge was jailed for three years and four months.
The medic was caught after police were told he had sent payments via online money service PayPal to an email account in 2012.
Text messages sent through web video messenger service Skype revealed that Titheridge had engaged in several conversations with a foreign woman, in which he asked to see naked young girls and asked for their ages.
His bank accounts confirmed several payments had been made.
Detectives have been unable to establish the identity of the woman who received the payments or the children involved. Prosecutors said the youngest girl he had seen would have been 14 years old.
…'Devastating impact'…
Titheridge pleaded guilty to intentionally obtaining the sexual services of a child or children under the age of 18 on various occasions between October 2012 and November 2013.
He also admitted possessing indecent photos and videos of children between June 2008 and November 2013.
His defence counsel said his client was sorry for his actions, and knew that "his life and his career now lie in ruins".
Passing sentence at the High Court in Edinburgh, Lord Kinclaven told Titheridge: "You are clearly an intelligent man - you have qualified as a medical doctor.
"It is clear that you have a number of friends and family who are supportive of you. The sentence that I am about to impose upon you will have a devastating impact on them.
"I must impose a custodial sentence on you. There is simply no other way of dealing with you." Thursday, 25 Feb, 2015

1/2...HIA inquiry: Man says HIA should not pay out compensation…
A former resident of a boy's home has said there should be no compensation arising from the findings of the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry.
The retired policeman, was cared for by Sister of Nazareth nuns in Termonbacca, Londonderry.
It is one of 13 institutions being investigated by the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry (HIA).
Some victims groups want compensation payments before the inquiry completes it work in two years time.
Bernard McEldowney spent 16 years at Termonbacca.
He left in 1976, aged 18, and eventually joined the police in England where he rose to the rank of inspector.
A year ago, he gave evidence to the HIA anonymously and told the inquiry that he believed the prospect of compensation from either the Sisters of Nazareth or the HIA had prompted some false allegations of abuse.
He has now decided to waive that right and speak publicly for the first time to raise his concerns.
"The problem I have is that the real victims will be marginalised by these people who have hijacked the inquiry," he said.
But other campaigners have rejected the charge, saying people giving evidence at the inquiry have been telling the truth.
